URZA'S DREAM ENGINE

Urza's Dream Engine is a neural network art bot that generates original images in the style of card art from the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game. It was created by game designer and artist Andy Wallace and inspired by the work of @RoboRosewater, another neural network created by Chaz and Reed. After gathering and cropping all existing art from the game (roughly 30,000 cards over the two decades that Magic has been in print), Andy broke the art down into sections based on the type of card it came from and allowed the bot to train for a week before asking it to generate images in the same style.

The images below are a few of pieces Urza's Dream Engine created in late 2017. These images are not collages built out of parts of existing images, but are wholly new images created by the bot in an attempt to mimic the style of the source material. More info about the design of this bot here.

The images are all low resolution. Because of the current state of neural network image generation, producing larger images would take huge amounts of computational time. The smaller size also allows for the abstract images to seemingly take a more concrete form.

Urza's Dream Engine was created using this Tensorflow implementation of Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks by Taehoon Kim.

THE ROBOROSEWATER ROBODRAFT

On Nov 18th 2017, Andy ran an event at Babycastles in NYC that paired the images created by Urza's Dream Engine with the card text and rules generated by the @RoboRosewater bot. The resulting booster draft tournament allowed player to experience the game Magic: The Gathering through a set entirely designed and illustrated via automation. This game was played as part of Weird MTG, a series of events exploring unusual or overlooked aspects of the game.
